About this event

Cuadro introduces students to the collaborative art of flamenco performance. In flamenco, a cuadro is the ensemble of dancers, singers, guitarists, and palmeros who work together to create a complete flamenco performance. More than simply performing choreography, students learn how each artist contributes to the music, rhythm, communication, and expression that make flamenco a living art form. A central focus of this class is the art of flamenco improvisation. Unlike free-form improvisation, flamenco improvisation follows a shared musical language and long-standing performance traditions that allow artists to communicate with one another in real time. Students learn to recognize musical cues, respond to the singer and guitarist, communicate through movement and rhythm, and understand the conventions that guide authentic flamenco performance while still allowing room for individual artistic expression.
