EDUCATION NEWS

  • Distinguished professor Eric Prossnitz at UNM has been named a 2025 National Academy of Inventors fellow. Nominated by the UNM Rainforest Innovations Board, he will be honored on June 4 in Los Angeles.  University of New Mexico
  • Albuquerque Public Schools now require clear backpacks for students at five middle schools including Wilson, Kennedy, Hayes, Washington & Cleveland to enhance campus security. The policy, announced Tuesday, replaces traditional bags with see-through alternatives provided by APS, though parents must buy replacements if bags are lost or damaged.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews with the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority are replacing a 90-year-old steel waterline along Carlisle in southeast Albuquerque. The project will close the southbound lane from Carlisle Place to Ross Avenue & drivers are advised to avoid the area until work is finished by the end of February.  KOAT
  • New Mexico turned 114 following its statehood on Jan. 6, 1912. The lengthy struggle involved over 50 bills and led to a vibrant mix of Native American and Hispanic communities, setting the stage for today’s diverse job market in tech + healthcare.  KUNM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A city-initiated housing project at 1st Street and Silver Avenue is moving forward under new management by Sol Housing; it was renamed Sendero, a five-story building with 141 housing units and 193 bedrooms. Groundbreaking will be scheduled (pending a finalized timeline) under an updated financing plan.  KOAT
