EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM ARTSLab received NASA funds and launched its Community Immersive Technology Hub in fall 2024 to offer public access to VR technology. At the Bands of Enchantment Music Festival, visitors tried Neon Forge (a VR experience that lets users create virtual neon signs).  University of New Mexico
  • State Rep. Kathleen Cates reintroduced a bill last week to stop book banning in public libraries. Backed by local librarians & authors, the bill sets clear procedures for challenging materials and protects staff from political pressure as the state prepares for its legislative session starting Jan. 20.  Source NM

  • Bernalillo County Fire Rescue accepted a $1.9M ladder truck on Tuesday at Fire Station 36 in Northeast Albuquerque (501 Bear Canyon NE) that features wireless headsets for improved communication and a shortened wheelbase for easier maneuvering in North Valley neighborhoods.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Mexico Department of Health launched its Drink Less, Live More initiative Wednesday to promote Dry January statewide. The campaign encourages residents to reduce alcohol intake for better sleep, mood, and overall health while offering practical resources and low-alcohol options.  Source NM
  • New Mexico will continue to recommend vaccines for 18 diseases today even though federal guidelines have been reduced to 11. Health officials say the decision is based on clear scientific evidence that vaccines are safe and effective for protecting children.  Albuquerque Journal
