EDUCATION NEWS

  • After 41 years of military service, Vicente Fernandez earned his Liberal Arts degree from UNM and now leads efforts to protect the acequia and watershed in northern New Mexico. He encourages younger community members to return and help preserve local traditions.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A recent report finds New Mexico could generate up to 163 gigawatts of renewable geothermal energy, enough to power roughly 750,000 homes per gigawatt, and experts will discuss scaling utility-scale plants during a live Let's Talk New Mexico segment on Thursday at 8 a.m.  KUNM
  • A warm winter and low snowpack are increasing fire potential in eastern New Mexico for February and March; officials are coordinating controlled burns + firefighter training to reduce risk. Residents in grassland areas are urged to stay alert to potential fire threats.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Jan. 9, the Legislative Finance Committee proposed cutting the Health Care Authority's budget by 5.4% for FY2027, removing $819.8 million due to over 30,000 New Mexicans leaving Medicaid.  KUNM
  • State lawmakers unveiled legislation earlier this week to join a multistate compact that lets doctors, paramedics, counselors and psychologists practice more easily and help ease the doctor shortage. Rep. Marian Matthews (D-Albuquerque) introduced extra compact bills, though some lawmakers say there isn’t enough time to review all proposals.  KUNM
  • The new Office of Housing allocated $820,000 to local shelters + transitional centers to boost warming efforts as winter sets in. Officials plan similar grants later to fund cooling centers.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • The state of New Mexico has expanded its grant program to support both new and existing primary care training initiatives — including programs in rural or isolated areas and for critical access hospitals. Applications for the $1M Graduate Medical Education grant close on Tuesday, Feb. 27.  KUNM
