COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MLK Dream Week runs Jan. 12 to Jan. 19 in 16 counties; in Albuquerque, a vigil starts at 6 p.m. Thursday at the African American Performing Arts Center (310 San Pedro Dr. NE) and the MLK Day march begins Saturday at University Blvd. and King Ave.  KUNM

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An intersection in northwest Albuquerque was closed after a water main break flooded the area, and police shut down Irving and Universe Boulevards near Ventana Ranch as repair crews worked to fix the issue.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three Muses Performance Collective debuts its inaugural production, 'Three Muses Storytelling: Small Moments,' with performances today and tomorrow at q-Staff Theatre on 400 Broadway Blvd. SE, offering affordable sliding-scale tickets & distinct formats that bring women’s storytelling to the community.  The Paper.
  • Michael Ogilvie, who brings nearly 30 years of art management experience, leads Albuquerque’s long-running Public Art Program after joining last fall. He now oversees nearly 70 projects — many along Route 66 — and works to boost support for local artists.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CNM’s film training center will open in September inside the historic Rail Yards Boiler Shop after delays caused by hidden foundation issues — the $73M project is a partnership with the city and state that will expand film and media programs for local talent.  The Paper.
  • Student-run LoboLift begins Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. at Cornell Parking, offering free on-demand rides after dark on Central Campus for UNM students, staff, and faculty (pilot runs until June 30) with trained student employees operating the service and collecting feedback to guide future plans.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM associate professor Shawn Secatero will receive a national teaching award for his work with the POLLEN Program, marking the Best Practice Award in Support of Multicultural Education and Diversity by AACTE. He will accept the award in New Orleans in February.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Legislative Finance Committee proposed spending over $11 billion from the general fund, including $73.2 million to lower educators’ health care premiums in the upcoming session starting on January 20, and LFC Chair Rep. Nathan Small said the measure would boost take home pay for public employees.  KUNM

  • The Aztecs beat the UNM Lobos 73-56 on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Viejas Arena — the Lobos dropped to a 10-13 record against SDSU. The Lobos will meet the GCU Antelopes on Saturday, Jan. 17.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
