COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KUNM is proposing a new program schedule that will shift more local news into primetime slots this spring, pending review by the KUNM Radio Board (Feb. 3). The changes come as the station seeks to grow its audience after losing 12% of its funding due to the CPB’s dissolution.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Miguel Marquez, a former CNN journalist, returns to his native Albuquerque as he joins KOAT-TV's Action 7 News More in the Morning with Royale Dá and Eric Green starting Jan. 26. He is eager to cover local stories after years reporting from global conflicts and pandemic hospitals.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM professors and students teamed with District 6 residents and Councilor Nichole Rogers to launch a participatory budgeting process allocating $1.5 million for food justice. They gathered local input to start a pilot project that includes a growers market site (a top community priority).  University of New Mexico

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Comic Con wrapped up last weekend at the Albuquerque Convention Center with around 54,000 fans and featured Gene Simmons & Alan Tudyk as special guests. Locals celebrated by dressing in costumes and joining panels.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM ARTSLab on University Boulevard brings art and technology together by offering AR, VR, and a large 3D printer for both university and local researchers. It launched its Community Immersive Technology Hub last spring and will move into a larger facility in fall to boost access.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Vince Gilligan’s new series Pluribus reinvents the alien bodysnatcher genre and casts Albuquerque as a soft, beautiful character in its eerie collective narrative. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kit Carson Electric Co-op will break ground this summer on a $231M hydrogen & solar facility in Questa, which is designed to provide up to 41 hours of energy storage and hundreds of new jobs. The project aims to boost regional energy reliability following a year of funding uncertainty.  Albuquerque Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A newly released report called for more groundwater monitoring and sustainable management as officials warned that less surface water would increase reliance on groundwater + experts recommended expanding aquifer mapping and installing monitoring wells to guide future policy.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NMDOT announced the winners of its annual snowplow naming contest, selecting 12 pun-inspired names from nearly 700 entries. The new names, including Snowbi Wan Kenobi & Betty Whiteout, highlight local humor as the updated plows get ready to work in winter.  Albuquerque Journal
  • New Mexico Office of Housing announced an $820,000 winter grant program that gives homeless shelters up to $20,000 each for supplies, capacity, and basic necessities & warmth. The funding, revealed earlier this month, helps shelters expand services ahead of winter's chill.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
