- ➤ Today at 11 a.m., local history enthusiasts launch the Route 66 Centennial Speaker Series at a dozen venues around Albuquerque, offering free monthly talks on the road’s legacy and the stories behind its landmarks. The Paper.
- ➤ Chicky Chicky Seoul, rebranded from Korean BBQ House Sushi & Sake, offers authentic Korean fried chicken with disposable gloves and kimchi at 4214 Central Ave SE (a new twist on local dining). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ APS has introduced clear backpacks at five middle schools this month to boost security amid rising gun incidents on campus; a survey of over 16,000 students found 88% oppose the measure and opinions among parents and staff are divided (concerns include privacy and durability). - ➤ UNM is finalizing its new electronic timekeeping system LoboTime that will replace the old Banner system and go live on Feb. 21. Staff and supervisors should check with HR or visit the LoboTime website for training details. University of New Mexico
- ➤ On Friday, the Senate Education Committee advanced Senate Bill 37, which would require schools to perform K-3 literacy assessments, use reading materials based on science, and notify parents + deploy improvement plans. - ➤ UNM has released initial findings for a $58 million Phase 1 project to upgrade University Stadium today, improving concourse space, restrooms, and accessibility for better crowd flow and safety on game days. - ➤ Federal agencies resetting royalty rates to 12.5% caused NM taxpayers to lose over $110 million in future lease revenues – the Bureau of Land Management auctioned 20,000 acres in Eddy and Lea Counties last week, which may cut funds for local priorities such as education and healthcare. KUNM
- ➤ Two bills in Congress may soon remove federal protections for Mexican wolves, shifting management to New Mexico and Arizona (a change that could allow lobo hunting and stall efforts to boost genetic diversity). Conservation advocates worry the move risks the species’ recovery. KUNM
