COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Sunport, passengers experienced delays and cancellations due to a massive winter storm that led to nearly 20,000 flights being canceled nationwide over the weekend + some travelers still awaited rescheduled departures.  KOAT
  • Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez delivered $2M in funds to Sandoval County, with $1M for a new Cochiti Multi-Cultural and Career Technical Education Center and $1M for upgrades at Pena Bianca Multi-Generational Community Center (including a pickleball court) to help rural and tribal residents.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition holds listening sessions in Albuquerque this week to record survivors' stories at Hyatt Regency Tamaya (Santa Ana Pueblo). The week-long project opens Monday at 4pm with a communal ceremony and concludes Friday at 4pm with a closing event.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albuquerque’s School of Excellence is opening a new K-8 campus this fall near Coors Boulevard and Sequoia Road; the project includes seven buildings and will use an electronic lottery on Feb. 18 to assign spots.  KOAT
  • The University of New Mexico is set to host its first Research Safety Week Tuesday — Thursday, Feb. 10-12 to promote safe research practices across the campus. Researchers, students, and staff will join interactive workshops, panel discussions, and lab tours to enhance lab safety.  University of New Mexico
  • The University of New Mexico today launched a national search for its next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs with Isaacson Miller to recruit candidates statewide. A committee led by Katie Witkiewitz will guide the process and invite community input before scheduling campus interviews in May.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two federal bills aim to remove endangered species protections for the Mexican gray wolf and shift management to New Mexico, which could permit limited hunting. Conservation advocates warn that the proposals may hurt wolf recovery given the low population and close relatedness (around 286 animals reported).  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tax season is underway today with a new Schedule 1-A tax form boosting deductions for seniors and others; a University of New Mexico economist predicts bigger refunds as the IRS processes 164 million returns (W-2s are due Feb. 2 and filing is due by April 15).  KOAT
  • Overnight closures will affect the Montgomery Boulevard overpass on I-25 as crews start bridge widening; traffic will be detoured onto Pan American Frontage Road (between Culture Drive and northbound Frontage) from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. tonight and Wednesday night.  KOAT
  • The state Senate approved SB1, the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Act, by a 40-0 vote on Friday. Lawmakers said the measure will expand telehealth services and ease the health care worker shortage—more reforms are needed.  KUNM
  • Travelers without a Real ID flying from Albuquerque must use TSA's new ConfirmID screening for $45 starting Feb. 1, and the fee covers 10 days of travel+ officials advise updating IDs online to avoid delays.  Albuquerque Journal
