COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local seller avoided a Facebook Marketplace scam today after receiving a fake Zelle email for a $500 verification fee in an overpayment scheme meant to trick him into refunding extra funds; he cut off contact and later sold his couch to a genuine buyer.  KOAT
  • La Mesa Presbyterian Church’s pantry in the International District helps Albuquerque residents choose fresh and rescued groceries through local donation efforts. Volunteers work with food rescue programs & scheduled pick-ups to ensure families have the basics amid rising needs.  Source NM
  • An environmental assessment for Buffalo Tract was submitted to BLM on Dec. 12 with public comment pending, and Sandoval County unveiled a Hazard Mitigation Plan draft on Jan. 21 that omitted Placitas. CULTURE NEWS

  • On Feb. 21 at 2 p.m., photographer Sondra Diepen will lead a visual tour of Route 66 through New Mexico at Placitas Community Library (celebrating the highway’s centennial) and sign copies of her book on the historic route.  Sandoval Signpost
  • New Mexico Arts offers Artist INC (free) to help artists learn business skills such as marketing, contracts, and financial planning. Local workshops have trained hundreds across the state and paired local talent with expert peer facilitators to build a creative network.  The Paper.
  • UNM graduate student Gabriela Guajardo won first prize at Lobo Bites for examining the film industry's influence on Albuquerque's culture and economy. Her research spotlights casting call stereotypes and changing local life (including effects of Breaking Bad) and hints at a poetry collection debut on Cinco de Mayo.  University of New Mexico

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congress approved over $13.5 million for IAIA (founded in 1962) as part of a bipartisan appropriations bill to support operations in Santa Fe (covering 73% of its budget). IAIA President Shelly Lowe said the funding affirms the school’s role in showcasing Indigenous art and storytelling.  KUNM
  • UNM is holding a nationwide search for a new provost (executive vice president for academic affairs) after a recent leadership change. A committee led by Katie Witkiewitz will interview candidates in March and April, with a new president chosen in May to oversee the appointment.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a Tuesday night closure that led to heavy delays at the I-25/Montgomery interchange, the NM Department of Transportation announced the interchange will close again tonight from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Drivers are advised to take detours via the frontage roads + Montgomery off-ramps.  Albuquerque Journal
  • President Missi Currier of the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association urged lawmakers to restore full conservation tax funding to the Reclamation Fund while safeguarding support for the Oil Conservation Division. The association stresses responsible oil and gas production and says an energy transition will come slowly.  Source NM
  • Today, the Energy, Mineral and Natural Resources Department holds a public forum in Hobbs at New Mexico Junior College focused on reliable energy and emission reductions. Six more forums are scheduled in other regions to gather local ideas for a clean energy future.  KOAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • State lawmakers will soon review a bill that would direct 100% of health insurance premium tax revenue to the Health Care Affordability Fund starting this September. Doctors and health care workers warn that incoming federal Medicaid cuts may worsen rising patient costs + strain primary care.  Albuquerque Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Just Point It is a homegrown ski company that builds 100 pairs of skis each year designed for New Mexico’s rugged terrain and local art; co-owner Ted Wolff plans to release tribute snowboards and a kids’ line to preserve the region’s slower-paced ski culture (including a sold-out Green Chile Ski).  The Paper.
