COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The BeKind UNM Committee will host its annual celebration on Feb. 11 to mark National Random Acts of Kindness Week. The event — a 17-year tradition — invites the Lobo community to join the campus celebration.  University of New Mexico

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Albuquerque firefighters extinguished a small accidental fire near Tingley Beach early Tuesday morning — the blaze covered about one-tenth acre and was out in 45 minutes with no injuries.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bernalillo County Arts Board is inviting New Mexico artists to propose mosaic tile designs for six concrete monuments along Bridge Boulevard medians between Coors Boulevard and Luray Place SW. Selected artists will receive a $25,000 budget and proposals must be submitted by Monday, Feb. 16.  The Paper.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ruidoso Downs moved its quarter horse races to Albuquerque Downs due to flood risks and wildfire damage, which may cost the village about $160 million in tourism revenue. Local leaders are planning weekend events & exploring flood control projects to attract visitors.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico is hosting a listening session for the search for its next provost and executive vice president for academic affairs on Feb. 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Student Union Building Luminaria Room and on Zoom for faculty, staff and students.  University of New Mexico
  • Thirsty for Thought will feature a neuroscience discussion with expert talks and Q&A on Thursday, Feb. 12 at High and Dry Brewing, 529 Adams St. N.E. The event welcomes families with non-alcoholic, gluten-free drinks + a food truck on site.  University of New Mexico
  • The House Education Committee advanced a bill on Monday that refines definitions of restraint and seclusion in public schools and requires twice-yearly deescalation training for K-12 staff (Rep. Yanira Gurrola said it is a tool for teacher and student safety). The bill now heads to the House Judiciary Committee.  Source NM

  • New federal SNAP rules now require about 56,000 residents to work, volunteer, or attend training to maintain benefits. Albuquerque food banks are preparing for increased demand as officials warn that recipients may face confusion with the new program (exemptions apply to some groups).  Albuquerque Journal
