COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque announced its Fresh Coat: Property Improvement Grant for Central Avenue businesses to receive $3,000 to $10,000 for murals and exterior paint ahead of the Route 66 centennial — applications are available online from Feb. 3 until April 3 for eligible properties across the redevelopment areas.  Albuquerque Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At the Artesia branch, Wells Fargo now has fewer tellers as it shifts customers to its virtual assistant today. The bank plans to cut jobs with a new AI rollout, though employees stress that human help remains essential for clients needing personal attention.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A proposal to let an appointed board oversee the Public Education Department did not advance in the Senate Education Committee meeting Wednesday due to concerns about board appointments and rural school needs. Sponsor State Sen. Bill Soules said he plans to work on changes so that students get stable education.  Source NM
  • UNM celebrates the 100th anniversary of Black History Month this February with events that honor African American contributions on campus. The university will host talks, exhibits and digital displays to engage the local community.  University of New Mexico
  • Faculty Lightning Lounge will be held virtually on Feb. 18 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. UNM faculty from Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia will discuss their branch campus research via Zoom (light refreshments will be served).  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Jeff Steinborn filed a bill to allocate $50 million for cleaning up abandoned uranium mines, defunct dry cleaners, and oil and gas sites that may contaminate local air, water and land. Community advocates cite serious health risks (including kidney and autoimmune issues) from past exposures.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NM AG Raúl Torrez and 17 attorneys sent a letter Monday challenging the federal plan to repeal long-term care staffing standards for facilities. The group warned that lowering the rules endangers patient care and urged officials to let states set higher requirements.  Source NM

  • The Breaking Bad house on Piermont Drive is listed for sale at $400,000, down from $4 million as of Feb. 4. The significant price drop is drawing interest from buyers+especially fans of the hit series.  KOAT

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lobo women’s tennis team swept WNMU and CSU Pueblo 7-0 to start 2026 on Thursday, Feb. 5, winning all doubles and singles matches with few set losses. They will face UT Rio Grande Valley in Houston on Friday, Feb. 6 to test their doubles improvements.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
