CULTURE NEWS

  • A new multimedia book titled Seventh and Central celebrates Albuquerque’s vibrant lowrider culture and challenges negative stereotypes by featuring colorful, low-slung rides and family traditions. Author and local photographer Nathaniel Tetsuro Paolinelli (a longtime community member) will host a book signing at the Albuquerque Museum on March 22.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Central New Mexico Community College’s Biotechnology program—serving students for over 20 years—offers a three-semester course from fall to summer that teaches hands-on lab skills in molecular biology and creates a direct pathway to UNM labs.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, a Pacific storm system is set to bring rain to Albuquerque Friday and Saturday with highs above 50 and potential snowfall up to eight inches at mountain passes; however, it is not expected to boost the low snowpack and water levels (National Weather Service).  Albuquerque Journal
  • Albuquerque residents can join the Great Backyard Bird Count from today until Monday, Feb. 16 as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society collect bird sightings using apps like Merlin Bird ID — a hands-on effort to track declining species.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State environmental regulators announced on Wednesday that they fined the Energy Department up to $16 million and demanded expedited cleanup of legacy nuclear and hazardous waste at Los Alamos.   • UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC) reported record-low employee turnover on Feb. 11 while expanding services with New Mexico’s only comprehensive thyroid and parathyroid specialty clinic and upgraded trauma care for severe cases.
