  • Marisa Magallanez began her role as president and CEO of the Albuquerque Community Foundation on Jan. 1 after her journey from flamenco classes at UNM led her to nonprofit leadership. She was named a 2026 Women Who Mean Business honoree, reflecting her deep commitment to community impact in Albuquerque.  University of New Mexico

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico African American Student Services unveiled a designated hair shop at Mesa Vista hall on Feb. 12 to offer student-run braiding and styling services on campus - the new space supports student well-being and entrepreneurship.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The University of New Mexico Black Student Union will soon publish a community newspaper to highlight Black history and report on current events. ECONOMY NEWS

  • New Mexico lawmakers plan to adopt new tax breaks to boost R&D for fusion, quantum, and advanced energy companies, with a decision expected before the session ends (Thursday). Pacific Fusion invested a billion dollars in its new research campus in Albuquerque.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM’s Department of Physics, Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Science will host a free public lecture by researcher Eliane El Hayek on microplastics and environmental toxicants on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 1100 (210 Yale Blvd. NE) with a meet-and-greet at 5 p.m.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Feb. 13, Black leaders and lawmakers celebrated African American Day at the State Legislature with a performance of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' and a resource fair featuring local Black-led organizations, where Rep. Pamelya Herndon (D-Albuquerque) honored ten outstanding Black women for their contributions.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

HEALTH NEWS

  • The ABQ BioPark Zoo added its new on-site CT scanner in December to improve animal care with 3D imaging. Vets now use it twice a week to check small animals up to 500 lbs instead of taking them off-site.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Lobos women’s basketball team lost to Colorado State 66-46 on Saturday, Feb. 14 after the Rams dominated the third quarter. UNM will face Grand Canyon University on Wednesday, Feb. 18 as they work to bounce back from the loss.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • UNM sophomore Kahari Wilbon broke personal records in the 400 (46.94 seconds) and 200 (21.49 seconds) races at recent New Mexico competitions, moving him to seventh on the all-time indoor track list, and he aims to secure podium finishes at upcoming meets while balancing his business studies and athletic goals.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Tajavis Miller joined the Lobos after three seasons at North Dakota State where he earned Summit League Sixth Man of the Year. He now energizes UNM by playing versatile roles off the bench.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The UNM women’s ice hockey team ended its first season with a sweep weekend — winning 5-1 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday against the Los Alamos Atomics — setting a strong tone for next season.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Lobo guard Destinee Hooks, who joined UNM in 2024, quickly became a leader and starter. Growing up in Indiana with strong family support, she set high standards — averaging 15 points and 4 rebounds this season — and aims to build on her success on the court.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
