COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rio Rancho hosts a weekend of music, history and family fun with early voting open until 6 p.m. Saturday at five local sites. The events include Ramón Ayala’s farewell tour at Rio Rancho Events Center Saturday at 8:30 p.m. plus local live music on Friday and educational exhibits on Saturday.  Sandoval Signpost

CRIME NEWS

  • Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office announced a memorial for fallen deputy Michael Schlattman, fatally struck on I-40 near Carnuel Monday; public viewing is Sunday, March 1 at Daniels Family Funerals and Cremation in Rio Rancho with a procession and service slated for Monday, March 2 at the Rio Rancho Events Center.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show begins today at Sandia Resort & Casino, showcasing hot sauces, spice blends, and barbecue rubs while offering tasting opportunities for family and culinary professionals. Organizers also partner with the New Mexico Restaurant Association to streamline the experience for both industry and food lovers.  The Paper.
  • Duke City Story Slam returns on Tuesday, March 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Canteen Brewhouse at 2381 Aztec Rd. NE with a Women-Inspired theme celebrating International Women’s Month—inviting local storytellers and listeners to share real stories with a $5 suggested donation.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico announced a 10-year naming rights agreement with Nusenda Credit Union to rename its basketball arena as 'The Pit — Powered by Nusenda,' pending Board approval; the deal averages $1.74 million per year.  KOAT
  • Plaintiffs in the Yazzie/Martinez case asked a judge to scrap the Public Education Department (PED) plan for fixing inequities in public schools. Nearly all state tribes also objected and urged the department to consult Native education experts for a new strategy.  KUNM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At its South Valley location (Bates Road near Second Street and Broadway), Soilutions celebrates 30 years by turning 500,000 lbs of food waste weekly into compost, soil and mulch. The company partners with seven local businesses, including M'Tucci's, and plans to reach 30 partnerships by year-end to cut landfill waste.  KOAT
  • The Mexican wolf population in New Mexico grew by 33 new wolves this year, now totaling over 300 in the wild; a new U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit lets ranchers in Catron County kill one wolf attacking livestock until April (the permit expires if a wolf is killed early).  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division will hold a public hearing after receiving more than 200 letters opposing the La Jara Mesa uranium mine near Grants. The hearing will be scheduled once the division sends its questions to Laramide about the 72-page mining plan.  Source NM

  • The northeast Albuquerque Breaking Bad house sold for $1.3 million has a new owner in streamer Adin Ross who won the bidding war — he plans to turn the property into a unique replica of the show near Montgomery and Eubank.  KOAT
