CULTURE NEWS

  • Outpost Ice Arenas has seen a massive increase in adult figure skating signups after the Winter Olympics — about 300 new learners registered in the past two weeks. The rink now attracts skaters from all ages, including an 85-year-old veteran who inspires others.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Erin Wilkinson of UNM is exploring how language, genetics, and global Deaf mobility shape resilience in diverse Deaf communities. Her research draws on experiences studying Norwegian Sign Language and a Paris workshop that examined genetic factors influencing Deaf history.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NSF announced it would begin demolishing the Sunspot Solar Observatory in southern New Mexico after finding liquid mercury in the Dunn Solar Telescope that made it inoperable. The project will include mercury removal and environmental surveys to protect local wildlife during the work.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham appointed accounting student Britten Ratcliff from the Anderson School of Management to the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board for a three-year term. He will join seasoned professionals & offer a fresh student perspective on maintaining standards.  University of New Mexico

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials reported that four new measles cases were found in detention facilities in Luna, Doña Ana and Hidalgo counties last Friday following inmate transfers from another state. They are using isolation protocols + urging residents to review their immunization records to prevent further spread.  KUNM

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Angel Fire’s Championship Shovel Races this past weekend, more than 100 racers sped down the slope at a popular winter resort, with sisters Nadia and Paloma Gonzales finishing first+second in the women’s category.
