CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Mexico Technology Council has announced the 2026 Women in Tech Honorees to spotlight women shaping the local technology industry. The ceremony takes place today at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and will honor leaders from labs and tech firms + award scholarships to tech students.  The Paper.
  • ABQ Funny Fiesta is a full week of stand-up, improv and variety shows across eight downtown venues + the festival features 27 shows including headliner Marc Maron on Sunday, March 8, giving local comedians a strong stage to shine.  The Paper.
  • Tamarind Institute at UNM presents Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: All My Relations through April 10. The exhibition features 20 lithographs created from 1980 to 2022 + works by artists she influenced, honoring her lasting impact on contemporary printmaking.  University of New Mexico

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AeroVironment announced a $30 million manufacturing expansion at its three sites in the Sandia Science and Technology Park. The defense contractor will add 450 good paying jobs in Albuquerque over the next 10 years — supported by state funding.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Gas prices rose 11 cents overnight Tuesday at local stations as AAA reported the increase amid rising oil prices from the war in Iran; Brent crude reached $82.10 a barrel at 1 p.m. EST. Experts say diesel and gasoline may increase by up to $1 per gallon if conflict lasts.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Record-low snowpack and ongoing drought + high temperatures are setting the stage for an active wildfire season in New Mexico through June, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Eastern areas remain on alert after a recent red flag warning led to a mobile home park evacuation.  Albuquerque Journal
  • New Mexico’s Environment Department spent $225,000 defending a proposed $47.8M fine on Targa for excess emissions at its Red Hills plant & the company has filed dozens of motions as it challenges the compliance order in the Permian Basin.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico will invest millions in universal free child care over the next five years to help families save about $12,000 yearly and serve 25,000 more children. Lawmakers plan state reimbursements to help providers meet costs (the program may guide similar efforts nationwide).  KUNM

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNM campus will host the Lobo Aquathlon on April 18-19 with a new run & swim course set due to campus construction; kids start at 8 a.m. Saturday and adults begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, with proceeds supporting the UNM Health, Exercise & Sports Sciences Youth Camp.  University of New Mexico
  • The New Mexico Lobos won 81-76 over San Diego State this weekend, tying for second in Mountain West standings and bolstering their NCAA tournament bid. The team prepares today for a second-to-last game against Colorado State and controls its destiny for a double bye (a top-three seed is possible).  KOAT
  • UNM’s baseball team swept St Thomas to improve to 12-0 in a series featuring early offensive bursts and a dramatic late win in game three. Key plays came from Damian Garcia, Ryan Castillo in game two, and a double by Garret Rede that sealed the victory.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The New Mexico Goatheads—chosen by a community contest—will start pro hockey in fall 2026 at the Rio Rancho Events Center. The team announced an affiliation with the Colorado Avalanche to boost player development and bring professional hockey back to the state since 2009.  The Paper.
