CRIME NEWS

  • Police SWAT arrested Jayden Martinez on March 13—an Albuquerque man tied to a drive-by shooting in Corrales Heights in Rio Rancho on March 8—and he now faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, shooting from a vehicle, shooting at a dwelling, child abuse and property damage.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The New Mexico Film Office announced that 'Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive' will be filmed in New Mexico with Emilio Estevez reprising his role as Billy the Kid—Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater will join the cast while local crew members and support staff are being hired. Filming is set to bring the third installment of this series, which follows the events of the Lincoln County War, to life.  KOAT
  • Albuquerque Little Theatre opened A Streetcar Named Desire last week and will run the play until March 23 at its San Pasquale Ave location, featuring fourteen actors with several making their ALT debut. Director Theresa Carson and intimacy specialist Celena Cox set safety guidelines—using a tap-out word—to help protect actors during scenes with strong themes like abuse and violence.  The Paper.
  • Zachary Kluckman, a poet with 20 years of experience, directs the Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival running from March 20—23 in Albuquerque with competitions, workshops, and free open mic events for local artists. The festival, holding a finals contest on March 22 at South Broadway Cultural Center, aims to revive our slam poetry scene and protect free speech with strict rules and ethical standards.  The Paper.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A national forecast says most of the state will face higher wildfire risk until April as federal cuts may leave many areas with fewer fire dispatchers and less firefighting help available. State officials are ramping up wildland firefighter training—this comes amid low snowpack and severe drought that add to the danger.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • As the legislative session nears its end, lawmakers killed three proposed bills that would have set tougher rules for the oil and gas industry (to cut pollution and boost transparency) even as the state counted record spills and dealt with worsening drought; a tax bill to raise royalties on new wells now awaits debate on the House floor.  Source NM
  • Sandoval County is partnering with local groups to offer free Uber rides for St. Patrick’s Day from March 14 at 10 a.m. until March 18 at 2 a.m. Up to 2,000 trips are available when residents in Sandoval, Bernalillo and Santa Fe counties use code NMGREEN25 for a discount of up to $10 off two rides.  Sandoval Signpost
  • New Mexico lawmakers are debating two data privacy bills aimed at protecting personal data—Sen. Duhigg’s proposal would let consumers sue companies while Rep. Serrato’s plan, backed by Attorney General Torrez, keeps enforcement with the state. Community groups back Duhigg’s bill and tech companies favor Rep. Serrato’s approach as the session nears its end.  Source NM
  • Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller—running for a third term—announced his reelection campaign, saying he will use technology to fight gun violence and address local challenges like housing and addiction. He joins three other candidates as voters prepare for the election on Nov. 4, 2025.  KOAT
