ECONOMY NEWS

  • International tensions have prompted the U.S. to release oil from strategic reserves, and New Mexico—its second-largest oil producer—faces higher gas prices and tighter production capacity in coming months (state officials worry about revenue impacts) as domestic drilling may soon increase.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM was recognized for the second year by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to tree education on a 5,000-tree campus & 235 species. The university will host Arbor Day events on April 24 with a campus cleanup at 10 a.m. and an arboretum tour starting at noon.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM's Anderson School of Management is launching a new series that highlights alumni now serving as top executives in sectors like banking, health care and tech. The profiles will appear on the Anderson School and University newsrooms in the coming months.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Andrew Mangham from the National Weather Service in Albuquerque warned a historic low snowpack, driven by drought and heat, may reduce water for farms, city supplies and ecosystems if monsoon rains do not arrive soon — lower reservoir capacity could lead to drier riverbeds and force farmers to adjust irrigation.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Consultants presented on Friday, Mar. 13 their preferred $240 million master plan to redevelop the Fairgrounds, retaining the State Fair and adding an outdoor stadium to anchor a new mixed-use district near The Downs Racetrack and Casino. The board will vote on the plan next.  The Paper.
  • State lawmakers approved continued funding during Friday’s meeting to support the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Task Force — the funds include forensic testing and victim support and will help update the state’s response plan by year’s end.  New Mexico In Depth

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal and Santa Ana Pueblo officials announced plans for a $251 million Indian Health Service outpatient clinic on Pueblo land east of the Bernalillo Soccer Complex, with planning beginning now and construction expected in 2027 to serve regional Indigenous patients (235,000 sqft facility, 500+ staff planned).  Source NM

  • New Mexico United said its $30 million stadium plan may shift to the Fairgrounds if legal delays at Balloon Fiesta Park persist. CEO Peter Trevisani noted the pivot (which could help the team meet league standards) was considered ahead of final recommendations at the Fairgrounds Reimagined meeting.  The Paper.
