ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered in Las Vegas for a candlelight vigil to honor three young adults lost in a house fire on Pecos Street on March 7 at 2:30 a.m. + funerals will begin Wednesday.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The third annual Chicharra Poetry Slam Festival will kick off at the Albuquerque Museum on Wednesday, March 18 at 6 p.m., where poets and community members will join for a poetry resolana (free entry) that encourages discussion and community storytelling.  The Paper.
  • The Lost Bus — a survival drama filmed in Ruidoso — has been nominated for an Oscar for best visual effects. The film, starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera, uses intense wildfire evacuation scenes to highlight resilience and raises funds for community wildfire recovery.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rosalía Pacheco of UNM College of Education used storytelling at the 4th Annual Building Better Readers Literacy Day in Las Vegas, N.M. last fall to help students connect with their cultural heritage while learning reading skills, and she now shares her interactive approach through teacher courses and workshops.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM University Libraries hosts the Ashton Speaker Series to explore impostor syndrome in teaching with a free lecture on Tuesday, Mar. 31 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Willard Reading Room — a workshop from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Frank Waters Room includes lunch.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sunday brought high winds that reached 81 mph at Raton airport (prompting a health alert in Albuquerque), and although winds will ease and Monday will be chilly, temperatures will climb later this week to the upper 80s to low 90s, possibly setting an early record heat day.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will launch a crosswalk safety campaign on Thursday at the South Broadway Cultural Center that honors teen cyclist Kayla VanLandingham (whose death spurred new laws and a local ordinance) as her mother urges drivers to stop to protect vulnerable road users.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today in Albuquerque the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Behavioral Health Unit handled multiple mental health calls, from assisting an elderly tenant to evaluating a suicidal individual at an apartment complex. The team provided on-scene treatment, safety measures and resource referrals (demonstrating empathy and immediate response) to help those in crisis.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Dr. Jeff Nichol, an Albuquerque veterinary behaviorist, explains that aggression among family dogs often stems from resource competition and persistent tension, especially among females. The series offers pet owner solutions and will continue next week with further insights.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Costco recalled its ready-to-eat Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze meals after an ingredient supplier warned of a possible Salmonella risk; shoppers who bought the product between Mar. 2 and Mar. 13 are advised to check labels and return the item at local warehouses for a full refund.  KOAT
