CRIME NEWS

  • A trailer loaded with 17 sports chairs was stolen from the Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation's storage facility yesterday, leaving a youth wheelchair basketball team without equipment to play while Albuquerque police review surveillance video and search for the white trailer (license plate No. 88119TRK).  KOAT
  • An ACLU complaint said ICE has lost track of 48 New Mexico residents taken in immigration raids in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Roswell—leaving families without news of the detainees’ safety as local leaders debate bills to limit federal law enforcement cooperation.  Source NM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Albuquerque Museum is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Casa San Ysidro, the historic Gutiérrez/Minge House in Corrales built around 1875 and donated to the city in 1997. The museum will host a series of special events throughout 2025— including Heritage Day on May 17, talks, demonstrations and workshops to help families explore New Mexico's history.  Sandoval Signpost

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The proposed state budget offers $20 million over three years to help keep college students enrolled and ease their struggles with food and housing. The plan provides $4.5 million in the next fiscal year—larger amounts will follow as schools choose how to best support both four- and two-year institutions.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews on the I-25 project in Albuquerque have been widening the Comanche bridge and building supports for a new interchange at Montgomery since last summer to ease gridlock. The work is ongoing and will finish in 2027—drivers are already noticing smoother traffic flow.  KOAT
  • City Councilor Dan Lewis introduced an ordinance last night to stop the sale of THC products made from hemp in Albuquerque. The ordinance aims to close loopholes in the 2018 Farm Bill that allowed unregulated products to reach consumers and is supported by the New Mexico Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, with a similar bill set for consideration in the state legislative session.  KOAT
  • Lawmakers sent 11 Senate bills and nine House measures to governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for approval—part of their push on public safety, water, and housing as the session nears its end on Saturday. Important bills like paid family leave and an alcohol tax will likely not move forward before the final gavel, while other proposals continue through committee votes.  Source NM
  • USDA ended the Regional Farm to Food Bank program that linked local farmers to food banks and delivered over 750,000 meals in two years—this program will officially end at the end of June. Local food banks and producers now say they must find new ways to get fresh local food to those in need.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC data show that over 300 measles cases have been confirmed in the first three months of 2025—nearly five times the number reported at this time last year. A New Mexico resident has also died from measles as most cases have affected youth under 19 and reduced vaccination rates have driven outbreaks in 14 states.  KOAT
