- ➤ New Mexico’s Native American community is honored with new Forever stamps called 'Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture' that feature the women’s traditional dance, Crow Hop Dance, men’s hoop dance, and women’s fancy shawl dance. A first-day-of-issue ceremony led by Cochiti artist Mateo Romero will be held at the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque on April 25th at 1:30 p.m.—the stamps honor cultural heritage. KKOB
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 11, Bernalillo County commissioners approved the budget for the digital speed camera program & created a full-time coordinator role to bring it in-house. The program uses citation revenue to support itself and plans to add more cameras to address speeding concerns. The Paper.
- ➤ Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham partially vetoed Senate Bill 5 on Thursday by striking the change that would have required court action to remove game commission members, saying the delay would allow issues to persist. Lawmakers plan to address the removal process in a future session + the rest of the bill, which raises the department's budget, fees and updates its name, remains in effect. Source NM
- ➤ Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 163 on March 20th, which lets Native American students wear their tribal regalia at graduation ceremonies this spring—an action taken after a Farmington incident raised concerns about bullying and cultural respect. The law passed unanimously and goes into effect immediately. KUNM
- ➤ Cindy Nava, a Bernalillo resident and the first former undocumented person elected to our state legislature, is one of six finalists for the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award by EMILY’s List—her work on public safety, affordable housing and education earned the nomination. - ➤ Researchers at Johns Hopkins say a measles outbreak is spreading fast across 22 states, with West Texas and New Mexico reporting a combined 320 cases — more than last year's total.
