EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albuquerque tutor Byron Zahn urged parents to review report cards and speak with teachers as students work to finish strong with two months left in the school year. He stressed that timely action will help both excelling and struggling students stay on track—families should reach out for extra support before reports are due in May.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two years ago an investigation found that dozens of children died after being placed in homes by CYFD, and lawmakers have now passed a bill that creates an independent Office of the Child Advocate—Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the legislation to boost oversight and accountability. Lawmakers also passed a separate bill to shift oversight of newborns to the state’s health care authority—aimed at reducing infant deaths linked to hospital protocols.  KOAT
  • New Mexico lawmakers ended their 60-day session just after noon Saturday after passing 194 bills and several resolutions, and they left nearly two dozen bills for Gov. Lujan Grisham to act on by April 11. Lawmakers also signaled plans for a special session to address issues such as funding cuts and juvenile crime.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • A University of New Mexico study led by Professor Steven Bradfute found that hantavirus is carried by more than 30 species of small mammals, including ground squirrels, chipmunks, gophers, rats and house mice—this research raises questions about why the virus may cause more cases in some areas than others. The study advises people to use approved masks and gloves when cleaning rodent droppings indoors, stressing that while hantavirus can lead to severe illness, its transmission remains rare and it does not spread from person to person.  KOAT
  • Assistant professor Roberto Mota Alvidrez is leading a study at UNM’s Johnson Center where about 50 Hispanic patients with type 2 diabetes follow a six-month exercise program to test if tailored workouts improve blood sugar control and lower heart disease risks. Researchers are collecting blood samples and body composition data from local participants while comparing results with a group that maintains their usual lifestyle—aiming to refine diabetes treatment approaches.  University of New Mexico

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
