ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, New Mexico Search and Rescue and partner agencies safely rescued a hiker with a leg injury in the Jemez Mountains.  KOAT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Andrea Griego built a 21-year career in plumbing, heating & cooling before co-founding First Rate Plumbing, Heating & Cooling in Albuquerque. She rose from dispatcher to manager and is now writing a book to guide women in the trades while championing fair employee treatment.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Delilah Montoya’s retrospective, Activating Chicana Resistance, is open at the Albuquerque Museum through May 3. The exhibit features 40 years of activism and art and is paired with a new book created with art historian Josie Lopez.  KUNM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Vancouver-based uranium company, Gamma Resources Ltd, filed its notice of intent last month to drill up to 12 exploratory boreholes near Canjilon in Carson National Forest and if approved after an environmental review will begin drilling next month with temporary drill pads and 800-foot roads for access.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An all-women team — five from UNM’s College of University Librarian and Learning Sciences and one from UMass Amherst — received the Jesse H. Shera Award on March 25 for their contributions to library and learning sciences.  University of New Mexico
  • The New Mexico Public Education Department is accepting applications for its eight-week paid summer internship program for high school students. Students will work 14 hours weekly while completing six hours of professional skill building and be placed in various fields, with enrollment open through March 31 (applications close soon).  KUNM
  • On March 6, UNM’s Anderson School hosted New Mexico’s first in-person qualifier for the 2026 Global Scaling Challenge as five teams proposed scaling strategies for Mesa Quantum. Team North (from NM College) and UNM’s MOT Express secured spots at the Finals on Friday, Apr. 3.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM is accepting applications for the Nate Crain Leadership Awards, which offer four undergrad leaders $1,000 scholarships for campus leadership, with the application closing Sunday, April 12 at 11:59 p.m.+ Winners will be notified on April 17 and honored at a reception on April 24.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM-PNM High School Mathematics Contest held round at UNM’s SMLC building on Saturday, Feb. 14 with over 110 students from 27 schools & a public lecture by Professor Elizabeth Gross. Winners will be announced in late March, with an awards banquet on Saturday, Apr. 18 at the Student Union Building.  University of New Mexico
  • The University of New Mexico will install four automated security gates along Central Avenue at Princeton, Stanford, Yale Boulevard, and Terrace Street starting in May, with work finishing in September to help slow overnight traffic on campus (temporary gates have already improved safety).  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A California jury found Meta and Google liable for a young woman's depression and anxiety from addictive social media use, awarding her $3m & starting a phase for punitive damages. Another New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay $375m for failing to protect young users.  KUNM
  • Bernalillo County commissioners approved a $175 million battery storage project by Plus Power to boost grid strength and store extra renewable energy near PNM’s West Mesa Substation. Construction will begin early 2027 at Ladera Business Park and the facility will open fall 2028.  The Paper.
