Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge will soon decide on a lawsuit that challenges the 10(j) rule limiting where the Mexican gray wolf can roam in New Mexico and Arizona—conservation advocates say the rule restricts the wolves' genetic diversity. The decision is expected in upcoming weeks and may lead to changes in the species' management. KUNM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Albuquerque police are teaming with Sandia National Labs to create a new surveillance camera network using five years of crime data—starting with Central Avenue and possibly expanding to Coronado Center and Cottonwood Mall. Some cameras will detect gunshots but not record sound. KOAT
- ➤ Lawmakers introduced nearly 200 housing bills in this session— the most since 2005— but many key proposals stalled in committee. Housing advocate Winter Torres said the stalled bills and missed opportunities made it hard for the Legislature to catch up as New Mexico faces a growing shortage of more than 32,000 housing units and rising homelessness. - ➤ State lawmakers passed Senate Bill 364 (SB364) that would let immigrants with federal work permits apply for police jobs by removing the citizenship rule; it passed the Senate on March 13 and the House on March 21. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham must decide by April 11 (if signed, the bill will open the door for more than 51,000 additional applicants) as officials work to address police shortages. Source NM
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ New Mexico health officials said billions in federal grant cuts did not affect the state's fight against measles even after losing $60 million in funding and 37 temporary contract staff. They reported 44 cases, including one in Lea County, and urged residents to get vaccinated—warning that measles remains highly contagious. Source NM
