COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, the ABQ BioPark Zoo delayed its opening when Alice, a 52-year-old Asian elephant, briefly left her enclosure around 7:30 a.m. Zoo staff guided her back safely, and the facility now operates normally, though the elephant habitat remains closed for repairs + monitoring.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico will host its first Loud Disco event this week in its renovated campus ballroom. Chairman Seymour Butz explained the party, which replaces silent discos, will feature a single DJ + free audiologist support, and a recent poll shows high student interest.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM closed the walkway between Dane Smith and Johnson Gym today for weed removal after common crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis) was found, and the area will remain off limits to vehicles and foot traffic until cleared to ensure student safety.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Founding superintendent Sue Cleveland retired after 32 years from Rio Rancho Public Schools on Friday, with the board commending her role in shaping the district. Her successor, Robert Dodd, who began on March 1, now leads the district (marking a new chapter).  Albuquerque Journal
  • University of New Mexico’s Lobo Lift program now offers piggyback rides via its hotline. The service runs from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. on campus and requires trained 'human vehicles' to complete a training course (including a timed mile with weights, breath hold, and low academic standards) for safety.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

  • Officials say the New World screwworm is likely to reach New Mexico as it spreads north from Mexico, keeping border cattle crossings closed and straining livestock trade; federal authorities will boost sterile fly releases from Moore Air Base this spring & plan 100 million weekly by November 2027.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UNM biologists partnering with PAHO report that their recent tests at over 100 freshwater sites in Puerto Rico show no evidence of the parasite’s vector snails, a key sign that schistosomiasis may be eliminated, with local health officials now trained for ongoing surveillance. Data will support a WHO review for final elimination confirmation.  University of New Mexico

  • Navajo bull rider Keyshawn Whitehorse clinched the PBR Ty Murray Invitational at The Pit on Sunday with four flawless rides that earned him a bronze trophy, a $53,992 payout, and a jump to No. 9 in the Unleash the Beast standings— the event will return from April 23-25.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The UNM Lobos signed four new recruits—Hingle McCringleberry, Javaris Jamar Javarison-Lamar, The Player Formerly Known As Mousecop and Davion Shower-Handle—for the upcoming season.   • Football coach Jason Eck and basketball coach Eric Olen have swapped roles to try new tactics for Lobo sports.
