CULTURE NEWS

  • UNM alumnus Victoriano Cárdenas wrote an award-winning gothic novella called Casa de Sueños inspired by local history — his studio apartment near campus sparked the idea. The novella won the Stephen Graham Jones Horror Novella Competition and a launch party will be held at Fusion Theater on April 26 at 4 p.m.  University of New Mexico
  • Sen. Ben Ray Luján, chef Steve Riley of Mesa Provisions and leaders at Bow and Arrow Brewing were nominated for the James Beard Awards yesterday for their work in food access and local cuisine. They will attend the ceremony in Chicago later this year.  The Paper.
  • The 2026 James Beard Awards nominees were announced this week, including Albuquerque’s Bow and Arrow Brewing Co. (a finalist in Outstanding Bar), and winners will be revealed June 15 in Chicago.  KOAT
  • The New Mexico Historic Women's Marker Program shows the important role of women in the state's history by installing 97 markers honoring 125 women since 2007 (42 are along the mother road). Local communities can visit these markers and learn more about their legacy on the program website.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New Mexico State Land Office (Mar. 20 decision) rejected Energy Transfer's application for leasing 0.63 miles of state trust land in Doña Ana County to supply the Project Jupiter data center. Energy Transfer said it will review surveys to determine a safe route that avoids state lands.  Source NM
  • A jury in New Mexico found that Meta misled consumers about its platforms and endangered children, ordering the company to pay $375 million. The Attorney General’s office will bring a final claim in early May to require changes such as effective age verification.  KUNM
  • Attorney General Raúl Torrez sued several convenience stores yesterday for selling candy-flavored e-cigarettes to teens, claiming they built a pipeline for addictive nicotine products and filing the suit in the 1st Judicial District Court to stop illegal marketing aimed at New Mexico youth.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The Bernalillo County Clerk launched the 2026 'I Voted' Sticker Contest, inviting Albuquerque Public Schools students to design original artwork inspired by the theme (Voting Is Your Superpower) to promote civic engagement. Submissions are due Friday, May 1, with winners announced before the end of the school year.  KOAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a news conference on Tuesday at Highland Park, Deb Haaland outlined a plan to overhaul state health care by protecting Medicaid, boosting rural clinics and lowering drug costs. If elected, she will invest in state funds to attract providers and improve access to care.  Albuquerque Journal
  • An Albuquerque-based school offered yoga classes to first responders last month after a 2025 assessment revealed high stress and burnout (94% and 90% respectively), with over half reporting depression symptoms. The program aimed to support local heroes by easing their mental health challenges.  The Paper.

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of New Mexico Athletics announced that former Lindenwood coach Amy Eagan will lead the Lobos women's basketball program this season. Eagan brings over 300 career wins, including a national runner up finish (Drury), to Albuquerque.  KOAT
  • The Isotopes played their home opener Tuesday night at Isotopes Field against the Reno Aces after a challenging 2025 season — the six-game series also includes day games on Thursdays to better suit fans’ schedules.  KUNM
