CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Opening statements began in the trial of former police officer Kenneth Skeens on April 1 for using excessive force during the arrest of Matthew McManus, a man with disabilities, at Target in northwest Albuquerque in August 2022—body camera footage shows Skeens and two other officers struggling to detain McManus during the incident. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On March 25, the Corrales Village Council voted 4-2 to reject a plan to form an Arts and Culture District designed to bring new events and arts to the community. Some residents worried the plan would change the town’s rural feel—while council members said it did not fit with the Comprehensive Plan—so the proposal was turned down. Sandoval Signpost
- ➤ Tickets for this year's Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will go on sale Friday, April 4—visitors may choose from general admission, park and ride, gondola, or chaser's club packages as the event will run from October 4 to 12. KOAT

- ➤ The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority announced that from April 1 to October 31 sprinkler and spray irrigation is banned between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to reduce water loss from wind and evaporation—customers may face fines or warnings for violations and should check their irrigation systems for leaks. - ➤ The Sandoval County Treasurer’s Office is expanding its Junior Treasurer’s Program by offering high school elective credit to selected students and will choose four juniors and seniors to join the hands-on program in August—essays are due by 5 p.m. on May 16 and selected candidates will be announced on May 23—. - ➤ New Mexico joined a multi-state lawsuit on Tuesday in Rhode Island federal court to challenge federal budget cuts that removed about $60 million from state health programs — which led to the loss of 37 temporary contract positions. State officials said they used other funds to keep measles and public health services running while the lawsuit seeks reinstatement of the funding. Source NM
