CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Today, law enforcement in Albuquerque shows progress from Operation Route 66— which seized more than 2,400 fentanyl pills, over 200 grams of meth, 24 guns and recovered 23 stolen cars— as local business owners report cleaner streets, increased patrols and fewer drug-related problems. KOAT
- ➤ Albuquerque police investigated two overnight homicides in southwest Albuquerque when officers found an unidentified shot victim at 801 Barelas Road SW after a Shotspotter alert and later discovered a person dead on Antler Tool Road SW when a homeowner fired a handgun as someone tried to break in—detectives are checking if the second shooting was justifiable. - ➤ Ariana Vigil, 26, was charged yesterday with reckless child abuse resulting in the death of her 15-month-old daughter after the child found a foil piece used when her mother smoked fentanyl—this is the third incident in Espanola involving fentanyl exposure in children. KKOB

- ➤ Last weekend, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reported that Mexican gray wolf Ella was found dead near Mount Taylor and her death is under investigation—conservation experts say her loss is tragic but ongoing efforts are boosting recovering wolf numbers to about 286 with positive genetic management results. - ➤ The National Interagency Fire Center forecast—released Tuesday—indicates that most of New Mexico faces above normal wildfire potential this month with risk growing until the monsoon season begins in July. So far this year, 222 wildfires have burned 31,675 acres while federal cuts may weaken suppression efforts. Source NM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed House Bill 66 on March 21, which will raise the fee cap in workers’ compensation cases from $22,500 to $30,000—then to $32,000 in 2027 and $34,000 in 2029 while boosting discovery cost advances starting June 20. The law is made to help injured workers secure legal aid, especially in rural areas with few workers’ compensation lawyers. Source NM
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The New Mexico Health Department reported on April 2 that childhood obesity rates for third graders fell for the fourth year in a row from 27.5% to 24.1% based on data from 40 schools in 21 counties. The report also noted that kindergarten rates dropped from 18.2% to 17.3% and that boys had 6.5% higher rates than girls — with American Indian students showing the highest rate at 27.6%. Source NM
- ➤ New Mexico’s health care agency joined a national learning collaborative with seven other states on Wednesday to share best practices in community-led mental health care. Officials said lessons from the effort will help improve mental health services and support new state laws that coordinate treatment and expand Medicaid funding. Source NM
