Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 7th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Preliminary data from UNM shows 89 pedestrians were killed in 2025—the lowest number since 2021—as officials credit safety upgrades like hybrid beacons and rumble strips on dangerous roads. Source NM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to low snowpack and early melt this winter, the Rio Grande in Albuquerque is set to dry up later as it carries half its normal flow. Local officials warn that limited water may push up produce prices — a sign of a challenging water season. KUNM
- ➤ Fire restrictions take effect today on non-federal, non-Tribal, and non-municipal lands as the New Mexico Forestry Division acts to lower wildfire risks amid extreme heat and drought (rules include bans on campfires, smoking, and fireworks). The policy remains until conditions allow easing of restrictions. The Paper.
- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Wildlife began its biennial review of 114 species to assess threats. Public comments are open until 5:00 p.m. July 6, and feedback will be discussed at a State Game Commission meeting at least 30 days later — relying on ecological and biological data. Source NM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Edgewood residents are worried they will lose fire and EMS services when the contract with the Santa Fe County Fire Department ends on June 30. The town will explore alternatives (including air ambulance and services from Bernalillo and Torrance counties) to maintain emergency response. Albuquerque Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ New Mexico health officials said a CDC pause on tests for rabies, poxviruses, and parasites on March 30 will not disrupt routine operations, as local labs can collaborate with regional partners for unusual cases (additional tests may be available soon). Source NM
- ➤ UNM professor Allyssa Memmini is creating a concussion management framework tailored to performing arts students—bridging a gap in recovery care found in athletics. The protocol will help students safely return to performance and academics, with future research guiding its implementation at UNM. University of New Mexico
