ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A report published yesterday shows that livestock grazing is damaging streamside habitats in New Mexico and Arizona — the study, based on eight years of field surveys, found that half of about 2,400 miles assessed suffer significant harm. Conservationists say low grazing fees and weak government protections are putting endangered plants and animals at risk.  KUNM
  • The U.S. Forest Service reversed a December recommendation to ban mining on 165,000 acres in the Upper Pecos, a move that local groups say puts the watershed and its clean water at risk. Sen. Martin Heinrich called the decision a betrayal and vowed to push for permanent protection—echoing concerns tied to past mining spills and ongoing cleanup efforts.  Source NM
  • Anti-nuclear advocates are worried after a secret agreement by the Navajo Nation in late January allowed Energy Fuels to transport uranium ore from its Arizona mine and possibly from its New Mexico Roca Honda mine near a sacred mountain. The deal also requires cleanup of abandoned uranium waste and could increase truck traffic from a few trucks daily to as many as fifty to sixty if the new mine is approved.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico lawmakers ended a 60-day session without changing oil and gas rules by not passing bills to protect schools and reduce emissions — federal moves to deregulate may soon weaken industry oversight.  Source NM
