CRIME NEWS

  • The New Mexico National Guard was activated after Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina requested assistance to fight crime in the city.  KOAT

  • UNM sociology professor Reuben Thomas said online dating is now the most common way Americans meet, leading to more diverse couples in race, religion, and education—while the overall number of relationships remains steady. His research shows that dating apps help couples move faster through relationship milestones even though the total rate of relationships does not increase.  University of New Mexico
  • Albuquerque Restaurant Week is underway today as local chefs, businesses, and food lovers celebrate the city's vibrant culinary scene. Organized by the New Mexico Restaurant Association, 17 restaurants offer exclusive fixed-price menus—such as a double-sided brunch and dinner three-course meal at the new DWTNR at Arrive Hotel—and the event runs until April 13th.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Albuquerque City Council allocated $21M from an opioid settlement to fund treatment programs—a decision that has drawn the mayor's opposition. The mayor argues the funds should be used differently.  Albuquerque Journal
  • On Tuesday, April 8, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed four bills at the State Capitol that launched the 50-year Water Action Plan to conserve freshwater resources and improve water quality protections. The laws also phase out harmful PFAS chemicals in consumer products and create a strategic water supply program to support clean energy and manufacturing growth + safeguard public health.  KOAT
  • Gov. Lujan Grisham has authorized the deployment of 60 to 70 National Guard members to support the Albuquerque Police Department along the Central corridor; they will assist with traffic control, Sunport and Metro Court security, and humanitarian efforts starting in mid-May.  KKOB
  • The New Mexico Supreme Court honored retired Justice Joseph F. Baca by presenting him a commemorative volume of opinions he wrote while serving on the high court. Baca, born in Albuquerque and having served as Chief Justice before retiring in 2002, said he was inspired by the late Senator Dennis Chavez to pursue a career in law—his legacy now is celebrated.  KOAT
  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed 60 bills into law on Monday covering issues from missing Indigenous alerts to election and public safety reforms—some measures took effect immediately. Senate Bill 41 creates the Turquoise Alert System to help law enforcement respond when a Native person goes missing, a move praised by community advocates.  Source NM
  • Councillor Louie Sanchez announced his run for Albuquerque Mayor by joining five challengers in the race.  Albuquerque Journal
