CULTURE NEWS

  • Cherokee journalist Rebecca Nagel spoke in Santa Fe today about her new book 'By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land' which details the forced removal of Native people and a Supreme Court case that restored the largest tribal land in U.S. history—she said her work sheds light on the ongoing erasure of Native history from the media.  KUNM
  • The Placitas Artists Series will present a concert on April 27 at 3 p.m. at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church where Megan and James Holland will perform with Judith Gordon on piano (featuring works by Beethoven, Dvořák, Godard and Henze).   • ABQ BioPark in Old Town is building a new 5-acre Mexican gray wolf conservation center behind the Botanic Gardens which will include five habitats for entire packs—this $1.5 million project is expected to be completed by the end of summer.  KKOB

  • The New Mexico National Guard outlined an operation to assist Albuquerque police amid rising public safety concerns—officials say the plan will provide additional support as needed.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Sam Bregman will soon announce his 2026 run for governor—he hopes to move from his courthouse work to a leading role at the Roundhouse, setting up a competitive primary contest. This decision may reshape political dynamics for state leadership.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Sandoval County appointed Eric Masterson as the new deputy county manager; his term begins tomorrow following the April 9 board meeting. Masterson, who has served the county for nearly 20 years, will oversee several departments—commission officials praised his community knowledge—and help drive future growth.  Sandoval Signpost
  • Albuquerque Executive Director Marcela Diaz of Somos Un Pueblo, Unido said her organization joined a lawsuit after the IRS and ICE reached an agreement to share undocumented workers' tax information — a move that critics warn could discourage tax filing and reduce public revenue.
