CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ New Mexico in Focus examines local issues by featuring HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s visit to Hózhó Academy in Gallup without a Q&A session and a segment on transparency challenges with UNMPD, while also highlighting efforts on Indigenous climate organizing and tackling childhood trauma. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of New Mexico will celebrate National Student Employment Week from April 14-18 by honoring more than 2,200 student employees who support campus operations. The event will include recognition activities and nominations for Student Employee of the Year - a chance to acknowledge their vital contributions. University of New Mexico
- ➤ Western New Mexico University’s new board of regents met on April 9 to plan a search for a new president and to launch a thorough audit of the school’s finances. They will meet again on April 29 to discuss the university budget + steps to address past financial issues. Source NM

- ➤ New Mexico's federal delegation reintroduced a bill on Thursday that would create a buffer zone of 10 miles to bar oil, gas and mineral leasing on non-Indian federal lands—this move was praised by pueblos and environmental advocates, with Senator Ben Ray Luján and Representative Teresa Leger Fernández leading the effort. - ➤ On the final day for legislative action, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham vetoed 16 bills—urging officials to focus on urgent matters and criticizing the Legislature for not holding hearings on bills like House Bill 494 that would shorten the tax exemption application window for veterans. KKOB
- ➤ Sen. Martin Heinrich co-sponsored two gun safety bills on Wednesday to regulate the sale of gas-operated semi-automatic firearms and ban bump stocks following a mass shooting in Las Cruces that left three dead and 15 injured — he said the measures build on reforms enacted in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. The bills aim to reduce gun violence amid a rising trend in firearm-related deaths among young people. Source NM
- ➤ On April 9, Gov. Lujan Grisham signed 10 bills into law that require all public schools to develop plans for heart emergencies with defibrillators, add crimes such as dog and cockfighting to organized crime laws, and launch a $4 million pilot project to support grandparents raising children. She has signed 128 of the 195 bills passed by the Legislature, leaving 67 bills pending before the April 11 deadline (lawmakers removed her pocket veto power and voters will decide on the change in 2026). - ➤ Governor Lujan Grisham vetoed 16 bills on Friday that would have allowed lowrider license plates, designated tortillas as the state bread, and required new lobbying reports—she said lawmakers must focus on addressing New Mexico’s urgent challenges. Source NM

- ➤ Matthew Garcia died on March 15 at Presbyterian Hospital, and his family honored him by setting a table with childhood photos and hanging his medals while taking comfort in his choice to donate two kidneys that now save lives in Oregon and Texas. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Health reported two new measles cases for children (ages 0 to 4) and two additional hospitalizations in Lea County as cases rose in southeastern counties. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the state will expand tracking and education outreach and urged everyone to get their free vaccine amid lost federal funds and layoffs. Source NM
