GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham vetoed House Bill 191 that would have set up funds for wildfire suppression and post-fire recovery because she said $12 million was too little against growing wildfire costs. Rep. Nathan Small, the bill’s sponsor, said New Mexicans will pay the price and urged lawmakers to act in 2026 — while state officials look at temporary funding options.  Source NM
  • Public defenders met in Albuquerque on Friday to review the legislative session that ended March 22, noting wins in stopping bills like HB204 and HB190 and a budget increase of only 4.1% instead of the nearly 13% they requested — leaving the agency short on full-time staff. They also said they will rearrange funds to pilot paying contract attorneys an hourly rate — as they work to close long-standing resource gaps.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Measles was diagnosed in an unvaccinated child in Dona Ana County — the first case reported there — and residents may have been exposed in Las Cruces at a preschool and several medical centers. The NM Department of Health recommends that infants 6–11 months old living in or traveling to Dona Ana and Lea counties receive the MMR vaccine, noting that vaccinations nearly doubled from Feb 1 to April 4 compared to last year.  KOAT

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
