COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque will celebrate its 320th birthday this Saturday in Old Town from noon to 4 p.m. The celebration includes live music, dancing, food vendors, birthday cookies, free face painting, a 25-foot rock wall and a Founder's Ceremony at 1 p.m. with street closures and free museum parking.  KOAT
  • Bernalillo County commissioners approved $184,818 to close the budget gap for Phase 3 improvements at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park, home to South Valley Market events. Upgrades will transform the park's east side into a multi-use field and add landscaping — construction will begin in fall with completion expected by mid-2027.  KOAT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Green Data Center CEO Jason Bak announced plans to build the world’s largest green data center in Socorro that will use 2 gigawatts of baseload power with battery storage and a water-neutral design. The project will work with New Mexico Tech and follows lessons from his past renewable projects.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Albuquerque entrepreneur Liz Kenzie runs Howdy Cakes and co-owns Prickly Foods, where she crafts innovative dishes using Indigenous ingredients and creative recipes. She will move her businesses into a shared space at the National Hispanic Cultural Center this summer (a new step in growth).  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • An exhibition (Nuclear Past, Present and Future: Art in Action) exploring New Mexico’s nuclear legacy is on view at the National Hispanic Cultural Center until Jan. 24 and features about 60 artworks by 32 local and regional artists.  KUNM
  • How the Stars Used to Shine There opens today at The Box Annex on 100 Gold Ave SW and runs through April 25. The production offers varied cast pairings with shows at 7 p.m., 6 p.m., and 3 p.m. + a Domestic Violence Resource Center booth provides community support.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico launched the Generation Hope FamilyU program (supporting 9,000 parenting students) to provide improved data systems, study spaces and community events. Selected for the 2024 cohort, the initiative includes a new study room in the Student Union Building to promote campus inclusion.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM associate professor James P. Burns (Ph.D.) is launching an international book series with Oxford University Press to explore how education can draw on history for a better understanding of today’s challenges; early volumes are set to debut next year.   • UNM astronomers have confirmed that the TOI-201 system hosts a super-earth, a warm Jupiter, and a brown dwarf using spectroscopy and transit photometry; their research published in Science Advances shows that the planets are actively shifting orbits, providing a rare, real-time window into planetary formation and evolution.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM released the schedule for open forums with presidential search finalists at SUB Ballroom C on Monday, April 20, Tuesday, April 21, and sessions in May — virtual participation is available as the Board prepares to announce finalists soon.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday to verify water use claims at Project Jupiter in Santa Teresa, with officials seeking clearer data from developers + the state Supreme Court ruled Monday that attorney Veronica Mireles stays on the House District 30 primary ballot after a signature challenge.  KUNM
  • On Wednesday, Bernalillo County district attorney Sam Bregman aired a TV ad highlighting that, unlike his opponent Deb Haaland, he is not linked to the Epstein records + he vows to hold those connected accountable in the governor primary. Haaland’s team described the ad as a false attack.  Albuquerque Journal

  • The 11th Annual Great New Mexico Food Truck and Craft Beverage Festival will take place Saturday, April 18 at Balloon Fiesta Park from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and offers over 25 food trucks + live music and an artisan market for families to enjoy a full day of local flavor.  The Paper.
