ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Lujan Grisham signed laws today that protect freshwater, improve forest health, and support wildlife management. The bills let state officials treat brackish water for industry—aiming to lower wildfire risks and adjust hunting and fishing license fees. The Paper.
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Albuquerque’s City Council approved a bill that will use cannabis tax money to help low-income neighborhoods and to stop drug abuse after many residents spoke up in a March meeting. The funds—expected to bring in $4.02 million every year—will be split equally between the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Department of Health, Housing and Homelessness to support a basic income pilot and youth programs. - ➤ Albuquerque officials required landlords to install cooling systems in rentals after workers put in a swamp cooler at a city apartment complex on Tuesday — failure to comply may lead to penalties as summer temperatures rise. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ The City Council (by unanimous vote) approved sending $180 million in general obligation bonds (GO bonds) to Albuquerque voters for infrastructure, housing and public safety projects. Voters will decide on the proposal when they cast ballots in the November local election. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ A federal judge ordered a 10-day trial in Philadelphia to start on June 9—at the request of all parties—and mediation talks are underway to resolve the Rio Grande water dispute.
