CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Albuquerque hosts arts events this weekend: Experiments in Cinema v21.5 runs at Guild Cinema until Sunday with international films, Adobe Theater’s Of Mice and Men plays this weekend, and the Route 66: Roads & Rails Transportation Festival takes place at Wheels Museum Saturday & Sunday with live music. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ An UNM undergraduate team is competing as semifinalists at the National Ethics Case Competition (April 16 to 18 in Washington, D.C.), having advanced through two rounds to present a case analysis and question and answer session for a chance at $250,000. University of New Mexico
- ➤ Albuquerque High School’s Jewelry Uplift Program has taught students to craft creative pieces for over 50 years in Room 305 + teacher Lisa Gillett connects them with local artists and internships. Student Oscar Munoz will showcase his designs at Harwood Art Center from April 23 to May 30. KOAT
- ➤ Nearly 800 fifth graders built inflatable habitats to simulate living on Mars at the Mission to Mars event on Thursday at the state fairgrounds in Albuquerque. Their projects, partly funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory, included solar-powered greenhouses and oxygen tanks (designed to support life). Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ Albuquerque Public Schools will begin classes for grades 1–12 on Aug. 6, 2027 & finish on May 25, 2028 after the Board approved the early start based on strong survey support, while pre-K and kindergarten classes will start on Aug. 10. Albuquerque Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ New Mexico became the first state to classify PFAS firefighting foam as hazardous waste after its Environment Improvement Board ratified the ruling on Monday, Apr. 13. The decision gives the Environment Department authority to require cleanup at military bases and airports to limit these chemicals. Albuquerque Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Albuquerque officials are expanding the Stop for Everyone campaign with new TV ads to boost safer driving as first-quarter statistics show fatal crashes dropped 54% and overall accidents fell 3%. The initiative, announced by Mayor Tim Keller, uses targeted patrols and upgraded intersections to protect pedestrians (and cyclists). KOAT
- ➤ Albuquerque is boosting street safety with new solar light installations in 16 neighborhoods this spring; work starts March 30 and continues into April, with each installation expected to take two weeks & promote energy-efficient public lighting. KOAT

- ➤ Dr. Abinash Achrekar explained efforts to end the stigma around brain injuries (affecting millions and costing billions) with the 'More Than My Brain Injury' theme. People needing help can find resources and survivor stories online. KOAT
