CULTURE NEWS

  • A local broadcast on April 23, 9 a.m. will highlight libraries’ extra services like internet access, food pantries, and a free washer & dryer, showing how they support community needs beyond books. Locals are invited to share stories about their favorite branch.  KUNM
  • The Gathering of Nations powwow is happening in Albuquerque this weekend and is its final year, drawing up to 150,000 people and boosting local business with about $28 million in earnings (officials are discussing a potential replacement event).  KOAT
  • Members of the Hopi Eagle Dance Group from First Mesa performed cultural dances at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center on Monday to kick off American Indian Week — a week-long festival featuring kids days, a senior day, arts markets, and a Round Dance. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM presidential finalist Elizabeth Watkins visited campus Monday at the Student Union Building and outlined plans to boost retention and career readiness by strengthening ties between the main campus and health sciences campus — aiming to preserve diversity and enhance workforce development.  Albuquerque Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Earth Day Festival NM will take place on Sunday, Apr. 26 at Balloon Fiesta Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature over 100 booths, live performances, and hands-on activities (free entry) to help families learn practical ways to save energy.  The Paper.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials on Monday ordered the emergency closure of Lindy's Diner (located at the historic Bliss Building on Central Ave SW) after inspections found dangerous structural issues; owners must hire a structural engineer by May 4 to address the risk.  The Paper.

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Heath Adams of Rio Rancho owns two rare vintage Lamborghinis (a 1989 Countach with scissor doors and a 420 horsepower V12 and a 1987 LM002 produced in limited numbers) after selling his cybersecurity business to pursue his dream, and he shares the cars at local car shows.  KOAT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Maverik did not appeal its permit denial for a planned gas station at Carlisle Boulevard and Indian School Road — the rejection was based on traffic concerns that many residents in Netherwood Park and Summit Park welcomed.  The Paper.
  • Construction starts next month on Lobo Crossing, a 365,000 sqft retail center west of The Pit featuring Target, Marshalls, Home Goods, Burlington and Old Navy.
