CRIME NEWS

  • Jaremy Smith was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for the 2024 shooting death of New Mexico State Police officer Justin Hare — the officer’s mother said the ruling ended her year-long rollercoaster ride — in Albuquerque.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Albuquerque Catholics were shocked by Pope Francis’s death as church bells tolled at a local shrine early Monday, and many mourned his passing. Local faith leaders described his entry into heaven on Easter Monday as a blessing — urging people to remain united in their grief.  KOAT
  • Albuquerque's Gravework is a three-member band that blends doom, grind, hardcore punk, and metal with hints of hip-hop, igniting local stages like Ren’s Den and Launchpad—drawing on strong New Mexico metal roots. EDUCATION NEWS

  • A report card shows Albuquerque Public Schools’ graduation rate increased in 2024 to 75.9%, up 4.3% from the previous year. Seventeen of 20 high schools improved, with La Cueva reaching 91.3% and Volcano Vista 89.2%—rates that differed by student group including a 6.8% rise for English learners and a 2.8% drop for Native American students.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UNM-Gallup Associate Professor Antoinette Abeyta co-authored a paper published in Nature Climate Change that calls for a shift to near-term ecological forecasting to guide faster climate change decisions. The report, published in December, urges more accessible data science training for rural and low-income communities — a move aimed at addressing inequities in environmental decision-making.  University of New Mexico

  • The Rio Grande Compact Commission will meet Friday in Alamosa to discuss drought, federal funding, and a pending Supreme Court case on river water while reviewing leadership changes including New Mexico State Engineer Elizabeth Anderson’s first meeting following Mike Hamman’s retirement — legal advisors noted the commission is also addressing requests from six Pueblos for direct input.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Abinash Achrekar of KOAT and the University of New Mexico said 97% of those with measles did not get the MMR shot and nearly 1 in 5 kids under age 5 went to the hospital. He warned that taking too much vitamin A without a doctor’s advice can hurt a child’s liver, eyes, and bones.  KOAT
