COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Animal Welfare Department is asking residents to volunteer amid kitten season (April through August) when shelters may care for up to 150 kittens at a time due to an early warm March. Volunteers can foster kittens and drop off supplies at the Eastside or Westside Shelter.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • ABQ BioPark will launch its reimagined Zoo Music and Garden Music series in May, offering interactive experiences (including national touring acts with themed zoo habitats and local talent in the Botanic Garden) for families at outdoor concerts from 6 to 8:30 p.m., organized by the Department of Arts and Culture.  KOAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jet fuel prices soared amid the ongoing conflict in Iran, causing airlines to raise fees and limit flights for the coming months. Albuquerque travelers face higher costs as experts warn (fuel prices may not drop soon).  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ashwani Monga, a UNM presidential finalist, visited campus Tuesday and promoted his record of enrollment growth, higher graduation rates, and stronger state ties (he previously increased enrollment by nearly 12% in Georgia). He said these measures would boost student success before the board names a new president.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM honored Distinguished Professor Edl Schamiloglu as the 70th Annual Research Lectureship honoree today & recognized his over 40 years of research excellence, mentorship, and pioneering work in engineering.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Meredith Dixon said at a pro-nuclear conference (Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort and Spa) Tuesday that New Mexico is ready to lead in nuclear energy following investments in uranium cleanup and fusion research. She may reintroduce Senate Bill 78 next year amid challenges convincing lawmakers and communities.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, April 21, 2026, the City of Albuquerque red-tagged historic Lindy's Diner (a 100-year-old landmark) in southwest Albuquerque for unsafe building conditions. The owners, who have long sought grant help, plan to raise funds for repairs.  KOAT
  • A House Natural Resources committee approved a bipartisan bill Tuesday that will transfer 10 acres of the former boarding school site to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center to create an entrepreneur complex (a move representing cultural and economic renewal).  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Abinash Achrekar from KOAT said allergy season has arrived as oak and maple trees release more pollen. He advised locals to wear long sleeves and hats outdoors and to change clothes and shower immediately once indoors (to curb sneezing and coughing) during the extended season.  KOAT
  • Coda Bakery in the International District closed on Sunday after inspectors found unsanitary conditions — signs of infestation — resulting in a red tag. City officials require a compliance plan to be met before a reinspection allows reopening.  The Paper.
  • Alfonso Ramirez, a former inmate who rebuilt his life with help from Albuquerque recovery programs, will head to Boise soon to help launch another Anchor Behavioral Health branch (serving as peer support) as he guides others on a path to healing.  KOAT

  • Jake Hall, Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and UNM’s key scorer, said he will remain with the Lobos despite offers from major schools. He made his decision a day after his brother (Dax Hall) committed to join the team.  KOAT
