CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Eric Bowannie, a 28-year-old Zuni Pueblo man, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after he shot local police & FBI agents during a home standoff in early July 2024 when he charged an officer with an ax and fired a shotgun and rifle. KOAT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ In Jemez Pueblo, the Black Eagle Singers have preserved an ancient Native American drum and dance tradition since 1989 & earned national recognition with a Grammy win. The group continues to develop new performances and add community members, offering a way for locals to embrace their heritage at events like the Gathering of Nations. KOAT

- ➤ The long-running Yazzie-Martinez education equity case heads back to court next week as plaintiffs allege the state has not followed previous orders and request a remedial plan to boost education for at-risk students. The motion hearing is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 29—plaintiffs seek swift action—while state officials contest who should lead the plan. Source NM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 16 on April 7 that now lets independent voters choose a primary ballot, and advocates celebrated the new law—allowing over 330,000 unaffiliated voters to vote without switching parties—outside the state capitol. Source NM
- ➤ On Monday night, Albuquerque City Council unanimously passed legislation that directs the Planning Department to hire a full-time code enforcement officer to help renters facing unsafe conditions such as the lack of running water, hot water, and proper heating and cooling (targeting bad actor landlords). The city reported about 5,000 311 calls for housing issues in the past three months, and the new role will help tenants quickly receive citations and understand their rights. The Paper.
- ➤ State Senator David Gallegos is working on a law to expand Safe Haven Baby Boxes so mothers in crisis can surrender their babies anonymously—he said this effort follows a newborn's death found in a dumpster earlier this week. KKOB
