  • Albuquerque is advancing a seven-mile rail trail project with a $70 million estimated cost that will connect downtown with key sites such as the National Hispanic Cultural Center, BioPark, Old Town, and the Rail Yards—part of Trail Days that started Saturday and invites locals to walk, bike, or hike along safe, car-free paths.  KOAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Raymond Mills died at the Metropolitan Detention Center after an autopsy found that a bag of drugs burst inside him—staff had removed the bag from his rectum during a booking earlier this year—confirming the unusual circumstances of his death.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Albuquerque police are investigating a deadly stabbing downtown that took place just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday and have closed roads near Rosemont Avenue NW — Second Street NW as the homicide unit works the incident.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albuquerque Public Schools is launching its first Spring Into Action food drive to support 3,500 homeless students after needs increased since COVID—donations of nonperishable foods such as cheese, packaged nuts, applesauce, beef jerky, beans, Ramen noodles, and trail mix will be accepted tomorrow from 9 to 3:30 at the AFL-CIO Professional Development Complex with students helping unload the items.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three University of New Mexico Economics professors published a book in April that finds Bitcoin mining’s energy use can exceed that of many countries—leading to health, climate, and waste costs estimated at 74% of the coin’s value. They warn that the proof-of-work process makes Bitcoin more like digital crude than digital gold.  University of New Mexico

HEALTH NEWS

  • The UNM College of Nursing is training nurse-midwives to help women in rural New Mexico fill a care gap—especially in areas without access to OB-GYN services, including tribal communities. Graduate Nichele Salazar leads efforts in the Four Corners region and said the new midwives will offer support from labor through menopause while blending traditional practices with western care.  KOAT
