CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Officers located the 31-year-old homeless mother of a deceased newborn found in a dumpster last week this morning—using a DNA tip from the Children Against Crimes Unit—and she said the baby was stillborn while lab tests are pending and the District Attorney’s Office has not charged her. KOAT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Daily Lobo began as a student paper when The Cactus first circulated in 1895 for UNM but lasted less than a school year before a new paper called The Mirage started in 1898. After several name changes and shifts to a weekly then semi-weekly schedule, the publication became the Daily Lobo in 1971—now printing weekly while emailing news on most weekdays and posting stories online daily. - ➤ At the annual Gathering of Nations Pow Wow in Albuquerque, 24-year-old Dania Wahwasuck from Mayetta, Kansas, was crowned Miss Indian World 2025-26 and vowed to uplift Native youth through education and cultural pride. She is working on her master's degree in leadership in diversity and inclusion + plans to use her platform to inspire indigenous students. KOAT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, weather forecasters warned that high winds, low humidity and dry vegetation created an extreme fire risk across much of New Mexico—conditions that could let wildfires spread quickly—in areas including Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Albuquerque Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Battalion Search and Rescue (an Arizona group) is searching along the border for missing migrants and has found 24 sites with remains near Santa Teresa in Dona Ana County while showing a mapping app to Mexican officers last Monday. Officials say no deaths were reported in Santa Teresa in 2025 (even though border patrol data shows nearly 900 migrant deaths occurred in 2022). KOAT
- ➤ Today, Albuquerque is rolling out new artificial intelligence-powered cameras on Central Avenue and Louisiana Boulevard — the cameras flash yellow to alert drivers when pedestrians cross a 700-foot stretch. Data from the cameras is used in real time and is not stored, and the city said the intersection was chosen because it has a history of dangerous jaywalking. KOAT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Stacy Burleson, Executive Director for Women in Leadership, is leading a campaign to teach New Mexico’s black communities how to use naloxone to help combat the fentanyl crisis. She said her efforts come from a personal struggle with drug addiction and a sharp rise in overdoses—New Mexico ranks as the sixth highest state and overdose rates among black youth are three times higher than others.
