ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lindy’s Diner in southwest Albuquerque saw its east wall partially collapse on Monday, April 27, after a red-tag safety closure on April 20. Emergency crews evacuated adjacent structures with no injuries reported — co-owner Dawn Vatoseow described the historic, 100-year-old diner’s loss as deeply painful.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico holds a ceremonial blessing today at 2 p.m. at the new Humanities & Social Sciences building site near Smith Plaza, featuring a blessing song by Diné singer Warlance Chee and remarks from university leaders as construction work starts this summer.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UNM hosted its Sustainability Expo last Thursday at Cornell Mall, where campus groups and local organizations demonstrated eco-friendly practices and indigenous farming methods. Hundreds of students learned methods, including the ‘Three Sisters’ technique (a trio of corn, beans, and squash), and joined a petition against a proposed AI data center.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Officials broke ground Monday in Mora on the New Mexico Reforestation Center, which will grow 5 million tree seedlings annually to restore forests scarred by recent wildfires. Construction will begin this year and expand seed processing facilities by spring 2027.  Albuquerque Journal

  • A three-judge panel upheld state mandates requiring automakers to offer 43% electric vehicles in 2027 and 82% by 2032, despite local dealers noting a drop in EV sales. The ruling leaves manufacturers with rising targets & federal challenges could affect enforcement.  Albuquerque Journal

  • Rural hospitals in New Mexico face growing financial strain as federal funding cuts and Medicare classification changes raise the risk that six to eight hospitals could close in coming years — even as $211 million in federal support is set to bolster care this year.  KUNM
