- ➤ Fire officials will hold a wildfire preparedness town hall at Los Vecinos Community Center at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1 to share tips for protecting homes from wildfire risk—attendees will learn about creating defensible space, planning evacuations, and fire restrictions. KOAT

- ➤ Police detectives investigated a homicide in northeast Albuquerque after a woman's body was found on the 300 block of Chama Street NE on Sunday night+ evidence at the scene led to starting the inquiry while her cause of death remains unknown. KOAT
- ➤ Albuquerque police charged 44-year-old Munah Green and her son Rickey Rodgers with murder after Rickey, who was on an ankle monitor, shot and killed 32-year-old Richard Powell last Thursday night in a southeast Albuquerque apartment—investigators noted that Green’s other son was fatally shot in 2015 in a justifiable homicide. - ➤ Albuquerque police located a 31-year-old mother after a newborn was found dead in a dumpster in northwest Albuquerque on April 22—she was questioned on April 27 and released after saying the baby was stillborn while investigators await lab and autopsy results to guide any future charges. KOAT

- ➤ Organizers said the weekend Gathering of Nations Powwow at Expo New Mexico drew an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 people who celebrated Native American traditions — Dania Wahwasuck of Kansas, a member of the Prairie Band of the Potawatami Tribe, was crowned Miss Indian World during a Saturday night pageant. - ➤ The Albuquerque Summer Youth Program is using a lottery for registration where families with an active CC Youth Card can sign up by May 9—selected families will register from 8 a.m. May 14 until May 23 for a $10 fee per child, with camps running from June 9 to August 1. KOAT
- ➤ Professor Elizabeth Quay Hutchison from UNM was named a 2025–26 American Council on Education Fellow—one of 25 higher education leaders chosen after a rigorous national review. She will use the fellowship to focus on improving conflict resolution and preventing sexual harassment while receiving course load relief and financial support to pursue these projects.
