COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The New Mexico ¡Sí Se Puede! Committee hosted its first Voces de la Comunidad event at Albuquerque Rail Yards on Saturday, Apr. 25 after rebranding from its former name to broaden its focus on community voices + local advocacy. Organizers say they plan more future gatherings.  The Paper.
  • NM Gas Co advises homeowners to call 811 at least two business days before beginning home projects to avoid damaging gas lines (says VP Ray Sanchez). The alert comes as incidents rise this April around New Mexico.  KUNM

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews contained a small bosque fire on Monday near Central Avenue and Atrisco Drive after about half an acre burned; calm winds helped prevent the blaze from spreading + no one was hurt.  KOAT
  • A portion of the historic Bliss Building collapsed Monday in downtown, causing Lindy's Diner to lose a wall after a city closure order for safety hazards + city officials and engineers began assessing the damage and have given the owner until May 4 to address the issues.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sarah James, a Gwich'in elder known for protecting caribou, attended Albuquerque’s final Gathering of Nations Pow Wow at Expo New Mexico on April 24-25. The event drew over 100,000 attendees and showcased her ongoing efforts to defend the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge against oil and gas development.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Rebel With A Clause, a docu-comedy about language by grammarian Ellen Jovin and her husband Brandt Johnson, screened yesterday and is showing today at The Guild Cinema at 3 and 6:30 p.m. Before each show, they set up a Grammar Table for Q&A and book signing.  KUNM
  • The Downtown Growers Market took place Saturday, April 25 and featured local vendors offering fresh vegetables, prepared food, art, live music by Robb Janov and interactive chess sessions by Learners Chess. The market celebrated spring – a vibrant local spirit.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

  • The University of New Mexico is inviting undergraduates to complete an online survey on academic and social experiences as part of its BELONG project, which closes May 15. Students who participate may win prizes like Lobo Cash or gift certificates + tour experiences.  University of New Mexico
  • Albuquerque Teachers Federation president Ellen Bernstein will retire on June 30 after a 44-year career in public education and 26 years leading the union — she will be replaced by vice president Sarah Hager, who ran uncontested for the role.  Albuquerque Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Los Lunas officials said wastewater treatment is improving after corrective adjustments reduced a higher-than-normal level of solids last Friday at the discharge point near the Rio Grande — Monday’s inspection confirmed progress. The village will continue monitoring water quality and provide updates.  KOAT
  • The Sparks Fire, seen Tuesday around 3:20 p.m., burned 1,500 acres in Quay County and threatened multiple structures although no evacuations were ordered—residents were advised to avoid Hwy 156 near mile marker 41 north of Hassell while crews from several agencies worked and investigated the cause.  KOAT

  • Native American rights advocate Jacqueline De León (Native American Rights Fund) warned that new mail-in voting limits may hurt rural Native voters who rely on distant post offices. She urged tribes to work with county officials to add more drop boxes and registration sites ahead of upcoming elections.  KUNM
