CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Cinco de Mayo celebrations light up Albuquerque today with free karaoke at Tractor Brewing Wells Park & Westside, taco specials at Cafe Bella, and live music at OT Sports Bar, Calavida Cantina and Kaktus Brewing. Residents can also join painting sessions in Corrales and other festive gatherings into the evening. The Paper.
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Book It summer reading program returns, offering free Pizza Hut personal pan pizzas to Pre-K through 6th graders who meet reading goals in June, July and August. Parents can enroll children online to curb the summer slide — a challenge the program has combated since 1984. KOAT
- ➤ The UNM Law Scholarship Golf Classic, presented by Nusenda Credit Union, will be held Friday, June 5 at the UNM Championship Golf Course and supports student scholarships for the School of Law. - ➤ A University of New Mexico lab will use a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Office of Naval Research to study new ceramic materials for a high-frequency propulsion engine in a five-year project (in collaboration with Purdue University). - ➤ Registration for Albuquerque’s summer program opens Monday and will run for two weeks; a lottery will select 250 spots from 600 entries for a program running from June 15 through July 31 at 20 community and two multigenerational centers (with activities, meals, and supervision from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Los Alamos National Laboratory plans a 30% expansion that will require roughly 1.4 million gallons of water per day for new facilities including an AI center and microreactors, prompting talks between local officials and the Department of Energy (county concerns include reclaimed water use and a chromium plume). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Tijeras residents with private wells can get their water tested free on Saturday, May 9 at the Tijeras Senior Center (10 Tijeras Ave) from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Run by the New Mexico Environment Department and Department of Health, the event is free for the first 100 participants. The Paper.
