COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Grace Church is closing the popular food truck park (Far Northeast Heights) after selling the lot and has given vendors until the end of May to vacate. Food truck owners said the sudden move caught them off guard as they scramble to find a new home for their businesses.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • UNM student filmmaker Michael Anthony Kurtz hosts the second annual Kurtz Studios World Premiere on May 14 at the UNM Student Union Building Theater. The event begins with a 6 p.m. red carpet and screens two short films — Letter to the Blind and Abby — with a $15 donation.  University of New Mexico
  • Sandra and Douglas Ferraro, longtime supporters of Indigenous art, have established an artist residency at Tamarind Institute to foster local creative talent—promising ongoing collaboration between emerging Native artists and seasoned printers at UNM.  University of New Mexico

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Mexico Highlands University President Neil Woolf was placed on paid administrative leave by the Board of Regents on Friday amid faculty complaints about union issues and building safety. Interim president Kimberly Blea will host an open forum today — the board will reconvene on June 2 to decide next steps.  Albuquerque Journal
  • A team of UNM students earned top honors at the Southwestern Undergraduate Mathematics Research Conference — held in Flagstaff, Ariz from April 17 to 19 — with UNM student Aldo Morelli winning the Problem Contest as the team took first place.  University of New Mexico
  • University leadership said today that UNM's research enterprise bolsters innovation through interdisciplinary projects (including partnerships with Sandia and Los Alamos) and initiatives like Grand Challenges that support faculty and student growth.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, early morning rain showers may form in west-central and southwest areas as mountain snow moves through northern parts and temperatures drop; meanwhile, southeast locations are under wind advisories and a High Wind Warning with gusts up to 70 mph — plan a cautious commute.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new agreement between the Santa Fe National Forest and the heirs of the San Joaquín land grant will restore the 200-year-old acequia – headgates will open later this summer to water cover crops and orchards while easing long-held tensions.  Source NM

  • Jenson Yazzie (Native Food for Life) says plant-based diets can help fight diabetes in Native communities as his family experienced more energy and weight loss after switching to meals with more fruits, grains, beans, and vegetables.
