COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The All-American Rejects held a pop-up backyard concert in South Valley on Wednesday night, drawing over 1,000 fans and playing until 10 p.m. By Thursday morning, the neighborhood had returned to normal, though a Bernalillo County Sheriff official flagged concerns about the event's short preparation time.  KOAT
  • Indigenous community members in Albuquerque held a prayer walk today to honor missing or killed loved ones and advocate for improved law enforcement and data collection (using red symbolism to mark their call for action).  Albuquerque Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Albuquerque Food Park, near Louisiana Boulevard and San Antonio Drive, will close by May 31 after the lot was sold—Grace Church owns the property—which forces vendors to seek new setups.  KOAT
  • Downtown Albuquerque's Silver Street Market, a 11,500 sqft grocery serving about 7,000 local residents, is now for sale as owner Kelly Brooks seeks a new operator by year's end—she hopes recent city initiatives will help ensure a smooth transition.  KUNM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Broadway performances at Popejoy Hall have generated over $47 million in economic impact in the past 24 months and will add more than $26 million to Albuquerque’s economy this season. The series by Popejoy Presents Roybal-Mack & Cordova, P.C. supports local dining, retail, and lodging.  University of New Mexico

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The APS Board approved a $2.35 billion fiscal 2027 budget on Wednesday focusing on student achievement, school safety & capital improvements. It includes a $1.15 billion operational plan for classroom support and now goes to the state Public Education Department for approval before July 1 amid a $16.1 million deficit.  KOAT
  • Malia Dumlao turned a college knee injury into an opportunity when she auditioned and advanced to join the Indianapolis Colts cheer team, with her UNM graduation and mom’s support fueling her success. She will soon start offseason events & community outreach in Indianapolis.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Corrales farmers face reduced water deliveries as the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District halted pumping due to low river levels. The district plans to install a new siphon by year’s end and may restart operations when sufficient flows occur (depending on rain).  Albuquerque Journal
  • A 234-mile pipeline that may carry natural gas+hydrogen blends passed a key review on the Navajo Nation. Officials say the project will undergo further evaluations to address environmental and community concerns before any construction begins.  The Paper.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bureau of Land Management approved a faster review for a 16-mile Green Chile pipeline on public lands to support Project Jupiter's data center, cutting the review time to 14 days (a move allowed by emergency permitting powers). The project still needs FERC approval before Energy Transfer can start construction.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Mexico recorded 126 hantavirus cases from 1993 to 2023, even though fewer than 30 U.S. cases occur each year and about a third end in death. Health experts advise residents to reduce rodent exposure (the main way the virus spreads) while international agencies monitor global risks.  KOAT
