Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 10th of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • At Tres Volcanes Community Collaborative K-8, a 12-year-old student was caught with a gun on May 5 — one of 13 firearms taken from school grounds this year, and on May 7 a hearing officer placed him with his grandmother as District Attorney Sam Bregman warned of a growing trend of juveniles with guns.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico will hold two spring commencement ceremonies for the class of 2025 — the graduate ceremony on May 16 at 6 p.m. and the undergraduate ceremony on May 17 at 9 a.m. at University Arena. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A report on the 2024 general election said New Mexico’s polls mostly ran smoothly—voter counting was good although same-day registration overwhelmed the system with 52,705 registrations, half on election day. Secretary of State Toulouse Oliver said the state will boost server stress-testing and add more staff next time to avoid the registration backlog.  Source NM
  • Lobbyists reported spending nearly $1 million in 2025—the highest total in at least five years—and about 70 of 665 lobbyists did not file their required disclosures by May 7, while top spender Missi Currier spent more than $360,000 to influence lawmakers during the legislative session.  Source NM
  • Over two dozen legislators delivered a letter to the Water Quality Control Commission asking it to pause a plan for a pilot project that would discharge 2,000 barrels per day of treated produced water to groundwater—arguing that permits should wait until strict scientific standards under the Produced Water Act are set.  Sandoval Signpost
  • Starting next month, regents on New Mexico university boards must complete 10 hours of training in state law, money management, school operations and student support — a requirement set by Senate Bill 19 signed on April 8. The Higher Education Department is building the program, and current members will finish the training by Dec. 31.  Source NM
  • New Mexico lawmakers overhauled the state’s wildlife agency by renaming it the Department of Wildlife and giving it a broader role to protect non-game species while adding new funding — an extra $10.5 million over three years. The change also revises how board members are chosen and will take effect next year, with the current board staying until Jan. 1, 2027.  Source NM
